ZAGREB, Oct 31 (Hina) - A panel of judges of the Zagreb County Court on Tuesday rejected the appeal by independent member of Parliament Branimir Glavas against the court ruling ordering his detention, citing fears of tampering with witnesses.

"The panel of judges rejected the appeal as unfounded because they found that the suspect had exerted his influence on some of the witnesses in the investigation by himself or through other persons," court spokesman Kresimir Devcic told Hina.

There are 22 witnesses who are yet to give their testimony and the judges believe that Glavas should remain in custody for fear that he might exert his influence on them, Devcic explained.

"It is the court's right to make such a decision," Ante Madunic, one of the lawyers representing Glavas, said in a brief comment on the court ruling.

Early last week the court ordered that Glavas should be remanded in custody for 30 days. However, the duration of detention may be reduced if the investigating judge hears all the witnesses before the expiry of that time limit.

On Monday evening, Glavas was transferred from Zagreb's Remetinec prison to the prison hospital after the fifth day of his hunger strike. Madunic visited him in the hospital on Tuesday.

"Glavas is continuing his strike. He's holding up pretty well and his health doesn't seem to be affected," Madunic said.
