SUBOTICA, Oct 27 (Hina) - A survey conducted by the Centre for Free Elections and Democratisation (CESID) shows that Serbs feel the greatest ethnic distance towards Albanians and Croats, the Croat National Council, the umbrella body of the Croat minority in Serbia, said in its bulletin on Friday.

"Every fourth citizen does not want to have any, even farthest, relations with Croats," reads the survey, which analysed the degree of ethnic distance towards members of other ethnic groups.

The survey shows that the most unacceptable concept for Serbs is a person of Croat origin holding the post of a state official in Serbia, while the most acceptable concept is for such a person to be an ordinary citizen.

More than a half of respondents oppose marriage to a Croat.

The ethnic distance was greatest towards Albanians, who are followed by Croats, Bosniaks, Roma, Hungarians and Montenegrins.

The survey shows that one of the reasons of inter-ethnic strife is the doubt regarding the loyalty of ethnic minorities.

"Slightly more than a half of all respondents agreed with the assertion that one should be careful in relations with other ethnic groups, even when they act friendly," regardless of whether they are Serbs or non-Serbs, it is said in the survey.

Serbs are unanimous about the lack of loyalty on the part of Albanians, but they also believe that most Croats and Bosniaks are not loyal citizens either.

The survey was conducted between August 26 and September 5 and covered 1,634 persons of age from Vojvodina and Serbia.
