ZAGREB/THE HAGUE, Oct 27 (Hina) - The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has appealed the tribunal's verdict sentencing former Bosnian Serb political leader Momcilo Krajisnik to 27 years in prison for crimes against humanity, it was reported on Friday.

The former speaker of the Bosnian Serb parliament was sentenced on September 27 to 27 years' imprisonment on five counts of extermination, murder, persecution on political, racial and religious grounds, deportation and inhuman treatment. Krajisnik was acquitted on charges of genocide and complicity in genocide.

In the appeal that was filed on Thursday and published on Friday, the prosecution said that the sentence was inappropriate and urged the tribunal to sentence the 61-year-old Krajisnik to life imprisonment.

The tribunal gave Krajisnik, who currently does not have defence counsel, an additional 30 days to appeal the verdict.

Numerous victims have described Krajisnik's sentence too lenient considering the crimes committed and described it as an injustice. During the trial, 124 witnesses testified about attacks on their villages, describing the killing of Bosnian Muslims and Croats in 35 towns and villages.
