SPLIT, Oct 25 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said in a comment on the Glavas case that only judicial bodies can decide if someone is guilty.

"I advocate individualising guilt and calling to account those who are guilty," Mesic said on Wednesday afternoon.

Asked if legal disagreements surrounding the case of independent MP Branimir Glavas, suspected of war crimes, were scandalous, Mesic said: "Yes, there is no doubt that this is a judicial scandal."

The President was also asked to comment on assessments that Croatia did not care about media freedoms.

"I do not agree with the assessment that Croatia ranks 51st according to media freedoms, although we are all aware that there are certain problems," Mesic said.

Market competition nowadays dictates different rules of behaviour and journalists are requested to dig up various scandals in order to ensure better newspaper sales.

"Journalists are forced to do this, and I believe that the VAT rate should be lowered for the press to solve the problem of job safety for journalists."

Commenting on last night's attempt on the life of Montenegrin writer Jevrem Brkovic, Mesic expressed regret at the wounding of Brkovic and the murder of his bodyguard.

"We had good relations when Brkovic was in exile in Croatia. I am sure that Montenegrin police will find the perpetrators because the Montenegrin judiciary, too, must start functioning," Mesic said at the 11th SASO economy fair in Split.
