ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - Zagreb County Court investigating judge Zdenko Posavec on Monday ruled that independent MP Branimir Glavas, suspected of war crimes against civilians in Osijek in 1991, should be remanded in custody, Zagreb County Court president Mirjana Rigljan said.

Judge Posavec accepted the proposal from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of October 10 to put Glavas in custody for influencing witnesses in investigative proceedings. The parties in the proceedings can appeal against the ruling, which is to be approved by the parliament.

The prosecution in this case recently requested for the third time that Glavas be put in custody, alleging that he had exerted pressure on four witnesses.

Judge Posavec turned down the previous two motions, and after the Prosecutor's Office appealed against his ruling on its last motion, the Zagreb County Court ordered the judge to investigate the prosecution's allegations, collect more information and decide on the motion under urgent procedure, which he did and accepted the prosecution's motion.

At the end of last week, the judge obtained information that an unidentified person in Osijek was under investigation for influencing witness Mate Salinovic, a former Osijek police chief who succeeded Josip Reihl Kir, killed in the early 1990s.

Glavas is charged with personally ordering the ill-treatment and murder of Serb civilians Cedomir Vuckovic and Djordje Petkovic and the torture of three other Serb civilians.

Krunoslav Fehir, the other suspect in the case of war crimes against Serb civilians in Osijek, is suspected of ill-treating and shooting at an imprisoned Serb civilian. He has admitted the crime and accused Glavas of ordering it.
