HAVANA, Sept 15 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic held several bilateral meetings in Havana ahead of the official opening of the 14th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Before the ceremony, Mesic held brief informal meetings with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Musa, a source from the Office of the Croatian President told Hina.

Mesic also met the Prime Minister of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Yong-nam, and heads of state John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia.

Mesic met heads of delegations of other countries - successors to the former Yugoslav federation, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia and Serbia.

For the first time since it gained independence, Croatia, which has observer status in the Movement since 1992, is represented by a head of state at a NAM conference.

Before travelling to the Cuban capital, Mesic said the purpose of his participation in the Havana event is to open new paths of cooperation with countries with which Zagreb has not yet developed ties.

Besides, Croatia is lobbying for being selected as a nonpermanent member in the United Nations' Security Council, and Mesic's attendance at the NAM summit will additionally boost efforts aimed at lobbying among Third World countries, Mesic's foreign affairs advisor, Budimir Loncar, told Croatian reporters.
