Now the Commission will do its part of the job. We will check whether Serbia has sufficiently fulfilled the criteria and then decide on recommending candidate status for Serbia, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said after receiving Cvetkovic.
The Commission's position on the matter can be expected in the second half of this year.
Barroso called on Belgrade to keep conducting reforms, adding that full cooperation with the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal remained a key condition for EU membership.
He called for stepping up the search for the remaining two war crimes indictees -- Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic.
