ZAGREB/THE HAGUE, Aug 30 (Hina) - Prosecutors at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) have demanded a life sentence for the former speaker of the Bosnian Serb parliament, Momcilo Krajisnik, who is charged with genocide and war crimes that were committed in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the 1992-1995 war, news agencies reported on Wednesday.

"Each count of the indictment individually, if found to be true, merits the highest possible sentence," prosecutor Alan Tieger said in his closing arguments at the Hague-based court on Tuesday evening.

Tieger said that the gravity of the crimes and lack of mitigating circumstances meant that Krajisnik "should be sentenced for life."

Prosecutors described Krajisnik as a member of an inner circle of Bosnian Serb leaders who masterminded a campaign of persecution and murder against the Bosnian Muslim and Croat populations with the aim of creating an ethnically pure Serb state in the territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The trial of Momcilo Krajisnik started in February 2004.
