BELGRADE, Aug 18 (Hina) - French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen said on arrival in Belgrade on Friday that Kosovo was occupied, that it had a gloomy future, and that France could face a similar problem thanks to its immigration policy.

Le Pen arrived for a visit at the invitation of the "Dijamant" motorcycle club from Arandjelovac, about 70 kilometres southeast of Belgrade, to open a Balkan motorcycle championship in Vrsac in the northern province of Vojvodina on August 20.

Speaking at a press conference organised by senior officials of the club at the Hyatt hotel in Belgrade, Le Pen said that European countries would find themselves in a similar situation to the one in which Serbia has found itself over Kosovo "unless they protect their borders" because "demography takes its toll."

Commenting on the next general election in France, Le Pen said that according to public opinion polls the support he was now enjoying was twice as high as that he had at elections four years ago.

Responding to news of Le Pen's visit, the speaker of the Vojvodina parliament, Bojan Kostres, said he was very surprised by the visit, and added: "Serbia is a land of miracles and everything is possible here."

"I am sorry that Mr Le Pen is coming as a representative of the far right, as a man who does not have any serious allies in Europe. I would be much more glad if people who are known to be democrats in Europe would come, people who can help in promoting Serbia and improving its image," Kostres said.

Le Pen was scheduled to stay in Serbia until August 22.
