UMAG, July 31 (Hina) - Croatia and Montenegro have been successful in dealing with outstanding issues and they set an example in the region, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and his Montenegrin counterpart Filip Vujanovic said in the northern Adriatic town of Umag on Sunday.

The day before Mesic and Vujanovic met on the Brijuni islands to discuss regional issues and integration with the European Union. Slovene President Janez Drnovsek attended the meeting as well, to discuss the Croatian-Slovene border dispute.

Croatia and Montenegro had to deal with many outstanding issues, "but we have taken our cooperation seriously and opened the borders," Mesic said in a joint statement with Vujanovic in Umag, where the two presidents attended the finals of the 17th ATP tournament Croatian Open.

President Vujanovic recalled the issue of the southernmost Croatian peninsula of Prevlaka, which he said the two sides had settled provisionally to the mutual satisfaction.

Temporary access to Boka Kotorska Bay was one of the issues that was settled, "which is functioning very well because we have no problems either with transport or with fishermen," Mesic said.

As for outstanding issues with Slovenia, there remains the dispute concerning the border in the Bay of Piran and fishing rights in that zone, which was also discussed at the Brijuni meeting.

Speaking of this topic, Mesic said that agreement was reached to seek services from the most prominent experts in internal law on borders.

If the two sides fail to reach an agreement on the matter as soon as possible, they should seek the help of an international court, Mesic said.

Speaking about the Ljubljanska Banka case, Mesic said that the savings of the bank's clients, "whether Croatian or Bosnian, cannot depend on what will happen with the property of the former Yugoslavia".

"Solving this outstanding issue means solving the issue of the arrival of Slovene financial institutions in the Croatian market".

Mesic also commended an agreement on the prosecution of war crimes signed by Croatia and Montenegro last Friday.

"War crimes suspects will be prosecuted in Montenegro, and our citizens will no longer be afraid when crossing the border with Croatia," Vujanovic said.

The two presidents strongly supported the project of the Adriatic-Ionian highway, adding that efforts would be made to finalise the financial plan. Vujanovic added that Montenegro would grant all the necessary concessions to those interested in taking part in the project.
