The Russian Consul-General in Podgorica, Vladimir Vanijev, presented the Montenegrin Foreign Ministry Secretary-General, Aleksandar Mostrokol, a note based on a 10 June decree of President Vladimir Putin on Montenegro's recognition.
The Russian Federation expressed willingness to establish diplomatic relations between Moscow and Podgorica at the ambassadorial level.
On 21 May, Montenegro held a referendum at which 55 percent of Montenegrins who went to the polls voted for the independence from the state union with Serbia.
On 3 June, the national parliament adopted a declaration on the country's independence.
Iceland recognised Montenegro as an independent and sovereign country on 8 June, being the first to do so.
