Court spokesman: indictment against Kadijevic is not related to Glavas case

OSIJEK, May 24 (Hina) - The spokesman for the Osijek County Prosecutor's Office, Zvonko Kuharic, on Wednesday dismissed claims that an indictment issued recently against the former Yugoslav defence secretary General Veljko Kadijevic was connected with the case of local politician Branimir Glavas.

Responding to a reporter's comment that some media speculated that the indictment was issued to divert attention from the Glavas case, which was referred to a Zagreb court, Kuharic told a local radio station that any coincidence was accidental because all relevant evidence in the Kadijevic case had been collected only recently.

Kadijevic and former Yugoslav Air Force commander Zvonimir Jurjevic are charged with war crimes against civilians, with issuing orders to Yugoslav pilots to bomb targets in eastern Croatia which they knew were used by civilians. Thirty civilians were killed and several were wounded in the attacks on Osijek and Slavonia.

The indictment was published on May 19 on the web site of the Chief State Prosecutor's Office as part of an answer to media reports that war crimes against Croatia were not being sufficiently prosecuted.

A warrant was issued for Kadijevic's and Jurjevic's arrest.

The indictment against the two was issued by the Vukovar-Srijem County Court in late 2002. The indictment also charges Blagoje Adzic, Bozidar Stevanovic, Zivota Panic, Mile Mrksic, Veselin Sljivancanin, Miroslav Radic, Vojislav Seselj, and Goran Hadzic with war crimes against civilians, wounded and ill people and POWs and with the destruction of historical monuments.
