ZAGREB, May 2 (Hina) - Europe invests a lot in culture and it is therefore absolutely appropriate that European Week in Croatia begins with a cultural event, the chief of the European Commission Delegation, Vincent Degert, said at Tuesday's presentation of the monograph "Europe 2020".

The monograph by Croatian designer Boris Ljubicic features nearly 250 posters from international poster design competitions in 2002 and 2005 held within the Europe 2020 project.

The project was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Croatian Design Society, with support from the Ministry of Culture and the EC Delegation. The aim was to have artists express their views of Europe's near future.

Speaking at the presentation, Degert said one should aspire to bringing closer history and geography. He said the European Union had achieved that with the last enlargement round but not completely because enlargement should continue so that countries waiting for accession, such as Croatia, could join. He voiced hope Croatia would join the Union soon.

Assistant Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Mario Horvatic also spoke at the presentation.

The central event of European Week in Croatia from May 2 to 10 will be an international conference in Zagreb on May 9 which will pool Croatian leaders, members of the European Parliament, senior EC officials, former entry negotiators from the EU's new members, and members of the academic community.

Among the officials to attend the conference, called "Croatia on the Road to the EU: Lessons Learned and Challenges", will be Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Degert, director of the EC Directorate General for Enlargement and negotiator for Croatia and Turkey Pierre Mirel, and Croatia's chief negotiator Vladimir Drobnjak.

During European Week in Croatia, which is organised by the EC Delegation, various events will be staged in Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik.

Europe Day is observed on May 9 throughout the EU, but Croatia is one of the few countries in the accession process which has been observing it for several years in a unique fashion, namely with a week of the most various events.
