The spokeswoman for the cantonal police, Aldina Ahmic, confirmed that Zoro Ivankovic had reported the attack and that an on-site investigation had been conducted.
In the dark the assailants ambushed Ivankovic in front of his building, threw a jacket over his head, toppled him to the ground and kicked him.
The victim refused to give any statement on the incident.
The media speculate that the assault may have been connected with the outcome of the last week's voting for representatives from Zenica-Doboj Canton to the House of Nations in the Federal Parliament.
During a secret ballot, a representative of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) was elected for a seat in the federal parliament's upper house, although the HDZ BiH has fewer deputies in the cantonal assembly than the NSRzB party led by the Lijanovics, businessmen from the meat-producing sector.
It was concluded that one deputy of the NSRzS voted for the candidate from the rival HDZ BiH which has also caused complications in the establishment of a governing majority in law-making bodies at the Croat-Bosniak entity level (federation).
The election of Ivo Tadic of the HDZ BiH for the canton's deputy in the federal upper house seems crucial for further plans for the establishment of the ruling coalition.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Bosniak SDA party, the Croat Party of Rights (HSP) and the NSRzB have planned to set up that ruling coalition without two major Croat parties -- HDZ BiH and HDZ 1990 -- but the developments in the Zenica cantonal assembly may have foiled their plan.
There are speculations that either the beaten Ivankovic or his party colleague Toni Pendic voted for HDZ BiH deputy Tadic as a representative in the federal parliament's upper house.
Zoro Ivankovic is the owner of a driving school in Zenica. He was not politically active before his election as an NSRzB deputy in the cantonal assembly in the recent elections.
