Croat accused of war crimes against Serb villager in east Croatia

Autor: mses
OSIJEK, Jan 5 (Hina) - The Osijek county office of the Chief State Prosecutor has issued an indictment against Veljko Maric, a 60-year-old Croatian citizen, on suspicion that he committed war crimes in east Croatia in 1991, the Office of the Prosecutor said in a statement on Wednesday.

Maric allegedly killed 66-year-old civilian Petar Slijepcevic in Slijepcevic's house in the village of Rastovac in the municipality of Grubisno Polje, on 31 October 1991.

According to the statement which only gave the initials of the indictee, Maric, who was at the time a member of the Croatian National Guard, shot Slijepcevic dead when he entered his house.

The crime was committed during the armed conflict with a part of the local Serb population, according to the statement.

A detention has been set for the indictee due to the gravity of the crime he is charged with.

Veljko Maric is currently kept in custody in Belgrade where a trial for the same crime has already begun against him. His trial in Belgrade was adjourned on 15 November until a decision is made on Croatia's request for his extradition.

The presiding judge explained that Croatia's judiciary requested Maric's extradition, which is why it will be decided later where the trial shall resume, so as to avoid unnecessary additional expenses.

The trial against Maric started on 7 October when he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The accused has been in custody since April 18, 2010, when he was arrested at a Serbia-Bulgaria border crossing.

Maric reiterated today that he did not kill Slijepcevic and that he did not know his family.

The Serbian Prosecutor's Office for War Crimes on 1 November requested an investigation into Maric on suspicion that he committed war crimes against civilians and wounded and sick people in the Croatian municipality of Grubisno Polje in September 1991.
