Marriages in Croatia on steady decline

ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - In 2009, a total of 22,382 marriages were recorded in Croatia, which was by 4.4 percent down from 2008, and a total of 5,076 marriages were dissolved, which was one percent more than in 2008, the Central Bureau of Statistics recently reported.

Broken down by regions, the highest number of annulled marriages were in the capital of Zagreb (1,030), and the central region of Lika was at the bottom of the list with 38 divorces in 2009.

The regions of Osijek and Rijeka rank second and third with 462 and 426 divorces respectively.

According to the report, there were 226.8 divorces per 1,000 marriages, and 1.1 divorces per 1,000 citizens.

The median length of marriage-prior-to-divorce is 13.7 years.

The number of marriages was on a steady decline from 36,290 in 1975 to 22, 382 in 2009.

In 2009, couples married in religious ceremonies accounted for 63.5 marriages, and civil marriages for 36.5 percent.
