"It should be resolved through a review of the privatisation, if that is the problem, or by opening new negotiations to meet the demands by the workers who cannot change their place of residence in order to keep their job," Mesic told reporters after the opening of the international conference "Trends and Prospects in Political Communication" organised by the Zagreb office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
Commenting on the problem of the 36 workers of the former TDZ who had taken over the factory which is now owned by the Rovinj Tobacco Factory (TDR), the President warned that it would not be good if the crisis were to be dealt with outside institutional procedures.
"Wether there were irregularities in the privatisation of TDZ or not should be determined by institutions, because any attempts to deal with problems outside of institutions could pose a threat to the functioning of the overall system," Mesic said.
The workers sent a letter to Mesic on Tuesday seeking his assistance. They insist that the privatisation of TDZ was unlawful and want it nullified.
