ZAGREB, March 30 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said he believes that figures which Croatia presented during negotiations with the European Union on the education chapter are founded in fact, but that those who are in charge of the matter should establish the real state of affairs after various interpretations occurred.

Mesic was asked on Thursday to comment on a statement by Gvozden Flego, a member of the Croatian negotiating team for that chapter, that the figures were falsified and that the Finance Ministry's budget was lower than the cited 4.4 percent of Gross Domestic Product.

I have learned of that from the newspapers, and those in charge of the matter should establish the real state of affairs, Mesic said, adding that he believed that the figures given to Brussels were grounded in fact.

Mesic was speaking to reporters during a visit to an exhibition of works by Van Gogh and Mondrian in Zagreb. He said he did not think that the presentation of different figures could slow down or affect the membership talks with the EU, and added that the different data could be the result of different methods of calculation.

Mesic said he had discussed the problem during his meeting with the European Commission's Delegation chief, Vincent Degert, earlier in the day.

It is important for us to maintain the consensus of all the relevant political forces, including those in power and the opposition, regarding our strategic goals, the Croatian president said, appealing to all sides not to use those goals for petty political purposes.
