Speaking to the press in Rijeka, the president of the strongest opposition party said the incumbent government had stopped the fight against corruption, only to quickly adopt a new anti-corruption programme when the problem was activated again.
"We don't believe the government is really willing to fight corruption," Racan said, adding that the Ivo Sanader cabinet had used political corruption to come to power in some local areas.
"This government hasn't continued the Croatian Railways modernisation project, the provision of a gas-supply system nationwide is lagging behind, nothing has been done to decentralise and regionalise the country. This government is dealing with problems it creates itself."
Racan said the SDP would cooperate with the government on issues of national and citizens' interest while staying in constant political conflict due to the concept of the incumbent government.
Asked if corruption was connected to the banking sector, he said "there are many disputes which cannot be accidental, but every instance of corruption has to be proved".
Asked if he would become prime minister again if the SDP won the next elections, Racan said he would head the party at the polls and if it won, "assume that responsibility".
