Croatia's GDP up 0.2 pct in Q3, ushers in recovery

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Nov 26 (Hina) - Croatia's Gross Domestic Product in the third quarter of 2010 was 0.2 percent up from the third quarter of 2009, a signal that the country has overcome the recession, according to figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Friday.

The figures were within the expectations of eight macro-economists polled by Hina, who had forecast a 0.3 percent upturn for Q3.

This is the first increase in GDP after it was on the decline for six consecutive quarters - the longest recession in the Croatian economy, which can be interpreted as an exit from the recession.

"Although it (0.2 percent-rise) is more a sign of stagnation, the positive rate makes us happy. Net exports alongside revenues from tourism have had a significant impact on this positive GDP rate in the third quarter," said Zdeslav Santic, Splitska Banka's chief economist.

In 2009, Croatia's GDP contracted by 5.8 percent.
