SUH said in a statement that even without the government's decision to freeze pensions in 2011, pensions had fallen by more than 10 percent in comparison to salaries over the last 10 years, despite their adjustment to living costs (according the so-called Swiss pension adjustment formula).
Any further decline in pensions will have tragic consequences for pensioners, the trade union said.
It urged members of parliament and the government not to freeze pensions earned by workers until they brought the so-called privileged pensions in order.
Privileged pensions of former army and police employees amount to HRK 4,606, those of war veterans amount to HRK 5,194, and those of MPs HRK 8,654, while the average ordinary pension totals only HRK 2,163, the union said, adding that 15 percent of pensioners were entitled to privileged pensions and that those pensions accounted for 31 percent of the total pension budget.
