Jandrokovic attends int'l conference on Balkans in Brussels

Autor: mses
BRUSSELS, Nov 16 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic said at a conference on the EU membership prospects of Southeast European countries in Brussels on Tuesday that he expected Croatia's accession negotiations to be completed during the Hungarian EU presidency in the first half of 2011 and that Croatia would remain committed to the European prospects of its neighbours.

Jandrokovic addressed the conference "Balkans in the Heart of Europe" in the Croatian language, which in the future will be one of the official languages of the European bloc.

He welcomed the recent decision by the European Union to liberalise visa regimes for citizens of Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European Commission's recommendation that Montenegro be given the status of an EU candidate, as well as the decision to present the EC with Serbia's membership application, explaining that those moves were an important encouragement for the continuation of reforms in the region.

Jandrokovic said his country would continue with its engagement in Southeastern Europe and with the promotion of the EU membership prospects of all countries in the region.

The head of the European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, Joseph Dahl, said that Europe must overcome its enlargement fatigue and clearly tell partners in the Western Balkans what can be done and what cannot be done in European integration processes.

We must be fair and serious to you when it comes to our obligations, Daul said.

On the margins of this event, organised by the EPP group in the European Parliament, Jandrokovic and Daul held talks. Jandrokovic thanked the MEP for his strong support to Croatia on its path to the EU.

Daul said that the EPP counted on Croatia in the promotion of the Euro-Atlantic prospects of Southeastern European countries, regarding it as the only guarantee of peace and stability in the region.

The conference was also attended by the Albanian and Macedonian Prime Ministers, Sali Berisha and Nikola Gruevski, politicians from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and several MEPs from the EPP.
