BRUSSELS, Feb 14 (Hina) - The European Union does not want to define what a required majority should be for Montenegro's referendum on independence to be recognised as valid.

It would be bad for the EU to get between the two fires although this is what both the government and the opposition want us to do, to recommend a required majority. We do not want to impose any solutions and we will accept what the two blocs agree, Miroslav Lajcak, special envoy of the EU's High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, said in Brussels.

Solana recently appointed Lajcak, a former Slovak ambassador to Belgrade, as his envoy to mediate in talks on Montenegro's referendum.

Lajcak met EU ambassadors in Brussels on Tuesday and was expected to meet representatives of Montenegro's government and opposition in Podgorica on Wednesday.

He told the press that several issues regarding the referendum had been solved, and that what remained to be defined was the referendum question, the date and the required majority.

The bloc advocating Montenegro's independence has proposed that the required majority be set at between 25 and 40 percent of the electorate, while the opposition wants that it be set at 50 percent.

Asked if the EU would propose that the required majority be set at 55 percent of those going to the polls, Lajcak said this was one of the possibilities.
