"I think this is cheap election campaigning and demagogy," Sanader said in the southern seaport of Split.
Asked if something could be done about the brush fires spreading to Croatia from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sanader said this was a unique international situation.
"I don't know if there is a similar case in Europe. I will ask our diplomats to tell us. In any case, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have to cooperate as closely as possible, but the question is when Bosnia will form its own fire-fighting units, because our Canadairs crossed the border to put out fires in Bosnia, but without firefighters on the ground, a fire can't be put out."
Sanader recalled that Croatia had sent a Canadair to Macedonia as well when fires had nearly reached Bitola and that the Macedonian government sent a note expressing gratitude for the fact that a Croatian aircraft had saved two villages near that city.
"I will probably suggest to the European Commission that a regional centre should be established in Croatia, in Zadar or Divulje, which would coordinate operations in case of emergencies in Southeast Europe," Sanader said, adding that if his suggestion was accepted, the centre would be financed by the European Union.
