ZAGREB, July 17 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Court on Tuesday launched an investigation of eight suspects in a recent corruption scandal in the Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP) by interviewing four witnesses from Istria County, investigating judge Boris Ivancic said.

The witness statements will not be made public because the proceedings have been declared confidential.

The investigation continues on Thursday, when another four witnesses from Zadar County will be heard. Witnesses from Zagreb will be interviewed next Monday and Tuesday.

HFP president Grga Ivezic is also expected to give a statement as witness, Ivancic said, adding that the investigation would end with Ivezic's testimony. However, if a request is made to expand the investigation, it will continue in September, he said.

The investigation is being conducted against HFP vice-presidents Josip Matanovic, Robert Pesa and Ivan Gotovac, HFP Real Estate Department head Igor Petlevski, an attorney from Buje, Asja Piplovic, her associate Mladen Jandricek, Zagreb lawyer Juraj Parazajder, and a Bosnian businessman Svjetlan Stanic, the only suspect at large.

The other seven suspects have been in custody since mid June.

The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) has charged the three HFP vice-presidents with soliciting bribes worth more than three million euros from investors wishing to buy companies from the HFP's portfolio.
