DC, HSP want parliamentary national security committee to discuss Zagorec case

ZAGREB, July 12 (Hina) - Democratic Centre leader Vesna Skare-Ozbolt on Thursday called for an urgent meeting of the parliamentary Home Affairs and National Security Committee to discuss and establish why presidential advisor Sasa Perkovic had met retired general Vladimir Zagorec, what he offered and by whom he had been authorised.

Zagorec is a former assistant defence minister accused of embezzlement of state funds whose extradition Croatia has requested from Austria, where he resides.

Skare-Ozbolt told the press the parliamentary committee must discuss the political dimension of the Zagorec case, saying that politics had actively become involved in the case, pushing out the judiciary.

She said the State Prosecutor's Office and its chief Mladen Bajic should summon those responsible in the government and at President Stjepan Mesic's Office so that their roles in the case could be clarified.

"It is high time to fully clarify the secret bank accounts used to purchase weapons for Croatia's defence or scrap everything, because what is happening is compromising both the government and the President's Office in the shedding of light on secrets from the past and in the fight against organised crime," said Skare-Ozbolt.

She added the fact that politics led the entire investigation would be proved if the committee did not convene or if no one from the authorities reacted to last night's claims by Zagorec's attorney Zvonimir Hodak, who said that a video of the Perkovic-Zagorec meeting showed that Perkovic had given Zagorec documents on Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's alleged involvement in the depositing of nearly 20 tonnes of gold on the Virgin Islands.

If Hodak is speaking the truth when he says that Perkovic gave Zagorec the contentious invoice and that it was not the other way around, as claimed by the government, Skare-Ozbolt wants to know why the authorities do not have the DVD of the meeting and why they keep the entire case a secret.

The Party of Rights (HSP) deputies in parliament too called for a meeting of the parliamentary Home Affairs and National Security Committee in view of establishing the truth about the Mesic-Zagorec scandal and Perkovic's role.

He suggested that Bajic, Perkovic and Security and Intelligence Agency chief Tomislav Karamarko should be invited to the session.

The Croatian public has the right to know the truth, the HSP said in a statement.

The press also asked PM Sanader to comment on Hodak's claim that the DVD showed that Perkovic gave Zagorec a forged document on 19 tonnes of gold. Recalling that he said everything about the case at a recent government session, Sanader reiterated that "this is silt, mud and a swamp".
