ZAGREB, July 6 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Friday gave a state for Croatian Radio during his visit to Kazakhstan, dismissing claims that he overstepped his constitutional authority, describing allegations of the transfer of nearly 20 tons of gold in a Virgin Islands bank as nonsense, adding that they were launched by the intelligence underground.

"It has not cross my mind to abuse my position. It has not cross my mind to violate the Constitution and its regulations, but if my involvement could help the institutions of this countries to function, it is my duty to help. One of the regulations of the Constitution says that president must make sure that all state mechanisms are functioning," President Mesic said commenting on allegations that he violated the Constitution, namely that his Office had disrupted the three-branch system of government because presidential advisor Sasa Perkovic held a secret meeting in Vienna with General Vladimir Zagorec, suspected of war profiteering.

The media claim that Mesic's advisor met Zagorec in Vienna in May and offered him to turn State's evidence in exchange for walking free if he submitted all documents on secret bank accounts intended for the purchase of weapons. The media later said that Zagorec offered a secret document proving that Prime Minister Ivo Sanader deposited 19 tons of gold in a Virgin Islands bank in 2003

Sanader responded to these allegations saying that no false accusations or imputations would prevent him or the government from resolutely cracking down on organised crime and corruption.

"First, it must be said that it is simply impossible to transfer 19 tons of gold and when something is impossible than it is really not necessary to burden the Croatian public with that," Mesic said.

"Why is it being done? We have a very active intelligence underworld which is interested in their petty, little accounts," Mesic told Croatian Radio.
