In the case of Gotovina, there had been some information indicating that the then ICTY fugitive was hiding in the monasteries, del Ponte said in a discussion before the European Parliament's Committee on External Affairs.
I don't believe that I have to apologise to the Vatican, she said.
Commenting on a recent meeting of Croatian law school professors who had harshly criticised the Hague tribunal, Belgian deputy Veronique de Keyser of the Socialist Party asked what could the European Union do given its political conditionality and Croatia's candidate country status. Del Ponte said that in Croatia the case against Gotovina was politically sensitive because many people consider Gotovina a hero who led the liberation war.
Del Ponte said she met "that professor" in the Hague declining to state his name. This professor came to see me and he looked entirely reasonable to me, she said. He attacked us over the term joint criminal enterprise, which is one of the elements of our indictment, del Ponte said. I wrote a letter to Prime Minister Sanader and now I am waiting for a response, she stressed.
