ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Court on Wednesday launched an investigation into and set month-long detention for suspects in the Croatian Privatisation Fund scandal, spokesman for the court Kresimir Devcic said.

The investigation was launched into and detention set for all eight suspects - Josip Matanovic, Robert Pesa, Ivan Gotovac, Igor Petlevski, Asja Piplovic, Mladen Jandricek, Juraj Parazajder and Svjetlan Stanic, who is still out of the reach of Croatian judicial bodies, so a warrant for his arrest will be issued.

The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) proposed that 37 witnesses be heard in the investigating proceedings and if necessary, other investigating activities will also be launched. The date of the initial hearing will be scheduled tomorrow, Devcic told Hina.

The investigation into the eight suspects was launched on suspicion of their alleged involvement in taking and giving bribes, revealing business secrets and conspiring to assist one another in taking bribes.

Investigating Judge Boris Ivancic decided to launch the investigation after he interviewed seven suspects, including Juraj Parazajder who was released from hospital earlier today. The content of the interviews was not revealed because the court declared the case confidential at USKOK's proposal.

After the investigation, the court will forward the documents pertaining to the case to USKOK which will then decide if an indictment would be issued. Under the Croatian law, people suspected of crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of USKOK can remain in detention for up to a year.
