The process of achieving independence lasts longer than you in Kosovo or we Americans wanted. But it is important that independence is achieved as a result of a UN Security Council resolution, which would pave the way for the EU and NATO, Wisner told reporters after meeting Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu.
The US envoy appealed to Kosovo government officials and citizens for calm in the province. He said that the US would try to speed up the process of reaching a solution, and reiterated the statement by US President George W. Bush that Kosovo would be independent.
Wisner stressed that the US wanted a decision to be reached by consensus so that Kosovo could be internationally recognised as an independent state.
Sejdiu said that Kosovo could not be held hostage to demands by any party for delaying a decision, and stressed that Kosovo would fully cooperate with the international community until the end of the process.
