Investigation launched and detention set for 12 men suspected of war crimes in Lovas

BELGRADE, May 31 (Hina) - An investigating judge of the Special War Crimes Court in Belgrade has decided to launch an investigation against 12 people suspected of war crimes in the eastern Croatian town of Lovas in 1991, spokeswoman for the court Ivana Ramic told the press on Thursday, adding that the judge also set detention for the 12 suspects.
BELGRADE, May 31 (Hina) - An investigating judge of the Special War Crimes Court in Belgrade has decided to launch an investigation against 12 people suspected of war crimes in the eastern Croatian town of Lovas in 1991, spokeswoman for the court Ivana Ramic told the press on Thursday, adding that the judge also set detention for the 12 suspects.

The suspects are four members of the former Yugoslav People's Army, four members of the former civili and military authorities in Lovas and four members of the Serb paramilitary unit active in that area during the war know as "Dusan Silni".

According to Belgrade-based Blic daily the suspects are Ljuban Devetak (58), Milan Dencic (55), Milan Radojcic (47), Zeljko Krnjajic (47), Miodrag Dimitrijevic (67), Darko Peric (53), Radovan Vlajkovic (53), Radisav Josipovic (48), and four members of the "Dusan Silni" paramilitary units Petronije Stevanovic (55), Aleksandar Nikoliadas (48), Dragan Bačic (46) and Zoran Kosijer (66).

According to media reports, the twelve persons are suspected of launching an attack and occupying of Lovas on 10 October 1991 when 22 civilians were killed, torturing and killing another 12 civilians on 11 October and of the death of 11 Lovas residents who were killed in their homes on the same day.

The are also suspected of the death of 22 civilians who served as human shield on 18 October and were forced to cross a mine fild, as well as of the death of another three person killed on 23 and 24 October and 11 November 1991.

The president of the former political party - the Serb People's Defence - Mirko Jovic, whose name appears on the ICTY indictment against Slobodan Milosevic as the founder of the "Dusan Silni" paramilitaries, told a news conference on Thursday he was not responsible for war crimes committed by "Dusan Silni" members.
