ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic received in Zagreb on Thursday the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, and the head of the OSCE Mission in Croatia, Jorge Fuentes Monzonis Vilallonga.

De Brichambaut said that a progress report on Croatia would soon be presented at a meeting in Madrid, adding that "Croatia, as always, is showing the way," according to a statement from the President's Office.

De Brichambaut thanked Croatia for the very good cooperation with the OSCE Mission.

Mesic said that the OSCE mandate was useful to Croatia both during the monitoring of its reforms and today in its advisory role. He stressed that it was necessary to continue the work on the return of refugees and displaced persons because that was Croatia's national interest.

Fuentes presented to Mesic the OSCE Mission's latest report covering the period of the last five years.

The report, which Fuentes described as very thorough and balanced, notes the progress made in particular areas, such as public administration, justice, minority status and human rights, and identifies what more Croatia needs to do in order to meet European standards.

Fuentes also spoke of plans for the gradual reduction of the OSCE Mission, estimating that the Mission might wrap up its work within the next year and a half.

Mesic and de Brichambaut also discussed the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the Croatian president noting that the region was not stable yet. It was said that international support for the integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina was crucial.

On the subject of Kosovo, Mesic positively assessed the plan proposed by UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari, under which Kosovo would be granted internationally supervised independence.
