SUBOTICA, April 24 (Hina) - Ethnic minorities are not proportionately represented in units of local government and administration in Vojvodina, according to a 2006 report of the ombudsman in this the Serbian province.

The Novi Sad-based Gradjanski List daily on Tuesday reported that the local office of the ombudsman had received complaints regarding ethnic minorities' rights protection three times more than in 2005.

The rights to employment and use the mother tongue were most frequently violated in 2006.

Ombudsman Petar Teofilovic said that only the town authorities in Subotica had taken care about the employment of members of ethnic minorities in local administration.

Commenting on problems, the ombudsman's deputy, Zoltan Gabor, cited the example of a municipal court in the province's capital of Novi Sad where there were about 60 judges and only one of them can speak Hungarian to conduct proceedings in Hungarian.

Ethnic Croats are also dissatisfied with their representation in the local administration and in Serbia's institutions.

One third of Vojvodina's population of two million are ethnic minorities.
