Cveticanin was received at his own request at the Croatian Foreign Ministry and conveyed to Assistant Minister Neven Pelicaric his concern over the April 13 incident in downtown Zagreb, the Serbian Embassy said in a statement.
The ambassador said the incident was unacceptable, Pelicaric told Hina, describing the assault as unacceptable hooligan behaviour.
"The Croatian side expressed regret," said Pelicaric. "The police intervened immediately, offering to drive the Serbian athletes to see a doctor, which they refused," he said, adding that the perpetrators had fled the scene and that the investigation was still under way.
Cveticanin also voiced concern about "hate speak" at sporting events, including at the current international hockey championships, calling for killing Serbs, the Serbian Embassy said.
Police said that Serbia's national hockey players were assaulted by about 20 young men in Zagreb's central square around 5 pm last Friday.
