The United States strongly supports Croatia on its path to full membership in Euro-Atlantic associations, Fried said during the meeting.
President Mesic said that Croatia's strategic goals were membership in the European Union and NATO and that efforts were being made to inform Croatian citizens about the advantages of NATO membership.
"Croatia is also continuing to work on strengthening regional cooperation as a key to regional stability," he added.
During talks on the situation in the region, notably Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, Mesic supported UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan for Kosovo's status.
Fried informed Mesic about his tour of the region, saying that he had conveyed to Bosnian Serb Prime Minister Milorad Dodik the position of his government on Bosnia's integrity. Fried and Mesic agreed that international support for the territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina was crucial and underlined the importance of continuing work on the constitutional changes in the country.
