Albanians are satisfied because most members of the Security Council support what Albanians believe is a proposal for internationally supervised independence for Kosovo, while Serbs are satisfied because the Security Council did not adopt the draft.
Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku said on Wednesday he was satisfied that Ahtisaari's plan was supported by most Security Council members.
It is now clear that the only solution for Kosovo is independence, although there will always be attempts to obstruct it, Ceku said.
He welcomed the position of representatives of the EU and the USA, as well as China, which, it was said, would support the EU's position.
Commenting on Russia's request to send a Security Council mission to Kosovo to check the situation on the ground, Ceku said that it was an attempt to delay and complicate the process, which he said would inevitably lead to independence.
Kosovo Serbs believe that the Security Council session was encouraging and offered hope that Kosovo would remain part of Serbia, namely, that Ahtisaari's plan will fail and that talks between Belgrade and Pristina will resume.
A member of the Serbian negotiating team and president of the Serb municipalities in Kosovo, Marko Jaksic, said that the session had given a clear signal that there would be no independence for Kosovo.
Another member of the Belgrade team and deputy in the Serbian Parliament, Goran Bogdanovic, said that the Serb side had presented its views in the right manner but that it had to continue diplomatic activities because some countries still supported Ahtisaari's plan.
The president of the Serb National Council of northern Mitrovica, Nebojsa Jovic, said he hoped that reason would prevail in the Security Council and that new talks would be launched to achieve a compromise acceptable for both sides.
"If Kosovo does gain independence in the end, it will mean that the UN has legitimately decided to carry out the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo Serbs," Jovic said.
The Security Council on Tuesday did not decide on Ahtisaari's proposal but only opened a debate on it.
