ZAGREB, March 27 (Hina) - After Monday's failure to elect a new Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) director, the Croatian Helsinki Committee on Human Rights (HHO) Media Council on Tuesday called on the members of the HRT Programmes Council to rise to the level of responsibility, underlining that the HRT's functioning as an independent media institution should have absolute priority.

The HHO said in a statement that some members had prevented the HRT Programmes Council from electing a new director and nearly sabotaged the Council's functioning, thus undermining the normal functioning of the national broadcaster.

Those Programmes Council members should bear in mind that such actions risked to bring a commissioner to the HRT.

The Programmes Council failed to elect a new HRT director because none of the nominees had the required two-thirds majority vote. Chairman Zdenko Ljevak said an acting director would be nominated on Thursday and that if the candidate failed to received a two-thirds majority vote, he would move that the government dissolve the Programmes Council and appoint a commissioner.

The HHO said it was of outstanding importance that the Programmes Council consolidate and elect the new HRT director by not endangering the functioning of a public service in keeping with democratic media standards.
