A state secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Ivica Buconjic, said that 257 million kuna was spent for mine removal efforts last year. Budgetary funds intended for this purpose were entirely spent, more than 90 percent of donations were spent, but allocations from physical persons and bodies of state and local administration were lower than planned (only 56 percent of planned funds).
What is encouraging is a decrease in mine incidents and victims of mine explosions - ten people were hit by mine explosions last year, of whom one fatally. In 2005, four people were killed by mines, Buconjic said.
He also presented a bill on humanitarian mine removal envisaging a faster and more efficient mine removal process.
