BRUSSELS, Feb 26 (Hina) - EU president Germany called on Serbia on
Monday to use the International Court of Justice ruling as an opportunity to
distance itself from the crimes committed by the Slobodan Milosevic regime in
the name of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and called on all sides
in the region to honour the verdict, voicing hope that it would close a painful
chapter in the region's history, a statement said. The ICJ, the
UN's highest court, today defined the 1995 massacre against Bosnian Muslims in
Srebrenica as genocide for which it did not hold Serbia responsible, and
rejected a request that Serbia pay damages. However, the ICJ held Serbia
responsible for failing to prevent the crime and punish the perpetrators.
The EU high representative for the common foreign and security policy,
Javier Solana, welcomed the ruling, saying it was good that there was no
collective punishment. He voiced hope that the ruling would contribute to
reconciliation among peoples.
We feel it will contribute to turning a page of history that was
dramatic and painful for many people, said Solana.
