DUBROVNIK, Feb 24 (Hina) - The fourth ministerial conference on border security in Southeast Europe ended in the southern Adriatic resort of Dubrovnik on Saturday with a round-table debate on the latest achievements in EU border security standards.

The intention of the three-day event was to bring Southeast European countries closer to better transborder cooperation in suppressing organised crime.

Participants underlined that all states in the region had organised their border police forces and significantly improved the implementation of European Union standards in line with agreed strategies.

The entire region achieved the objectives of the Ohrid Process on Border Security and Management, which was launched in 2003, it was said.

Croatian Interior Minister Ivica Kirin said that all Southeast European states were agreed that strengthening international police cooperation and border services, in line with the best European practice and Schengen standards, was an important prerequisite for successfully fighting the increasingly capable international organised crime which possessed state-of-the-art equipment.

The Dubrovnik conference gathered 110 participants from 20 states who discussed ways of improving national capacities in border security.

The event was jointly organised by the Croatian Interior Ministry and the Geneva-based Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces.
