IMOTSKI, Jan 20 (Hina) - The chief of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has said that the construction of a tunnel through Mount Biokovo connecting a wider area of Imotski and the Makarska riviera will start this year.

Addressing a party rally organised in the southern town of Imotski on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the local HDZ branch, Sanader said that in his capacity as the HDZ leader and the country's premier he had entrusted Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta and Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Ante Sanader to solve the problems surrounding the issue of concessions for the construction of St. Elias Tunnel through Biokovo.

The announcement was welcomed with long applause in the packed cinema theatre in Imotski where the rally was held.

Sanader spoke, among other things, about the importance of road construction and in this context he reiterated that it was important to connect the southern peninsula of Peljesac with the mainland.

The present-day Croatia has highways and is building highways so as to connect all areas and make it possible for them to develop equally, Sanader said.

He pledged support to the economic development of the Imotski area.

Sanader paid tribute to volunteers and soldiers from Imotski in the Homeland Defence War in 1990s. He recalled that 130 soldiers from this area had died in the war an more than 400 had been injured and were now disabled war veterans.

Present at the Imotski event were leaders of Bosnia-Herzegovina's HDZ 1990 - Bozo Ljubic and Martin Raguz.

Sanader called on them to try reconcile and unite with the Bosnia HDZ led by Dragan Covic.

"I urge them and hope that they will be able to muster strength to unite in these serious times when the issue of Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina is being solved. Bozo (Ljubic) has told me that he is ready and I hope that Dragan Covic will accept this initiative, and that they will unite and together defend the equality and sovereignty of the Croats in Bosnia as a constituent people," Sanader said at the rally.
