Minister says first two weeks in July encouraging for tourist season

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, July 12 (Hina) - A higher number of tourist arrivals on the year in the first two weeks in July are encouraging for Croatia's tourist trade, Tourism Minister Damir Bajs said on Monday, adding that Croatia should be aware that competing countries are doing all they can to attract as many tourists as possible.

Thus, the competitiveness of Croatia's tourism will face the biggest test in the rest of July and in August, when two thirds of all annual arrivals and income in the tourist trade are made, the minister said at his meeting with the first Croatian deaf tourist guide Vanda Sagovac in Zagreb.

Bajs also expressed satisfaction with an increasing number of cruise liners visiting Croatia.

Asked by reporters to comment on an incident in Vodice where, according to media reports, a motorcyclist assaulted the driver of a car with Belgrade licence plates over the traffic situation, the minister said he had demanded a report on the incident and that the bodies in charge were still checking whether the incident was inter-ethnic or not.

The tourism ministry condemns such incidents just as any other incidents, Bajs said.

During tourism season incidents happen, but it is most important for Croatia to show that it is a law-based country and that police promptly react towards everyone equally, he said.

As regards a two-day strike of Croatia Airlines flight attendants last Friday and Saturday, Bajs said they had the right to that industrial action, but warned that it would not contribute to the success of the season.
