Two witnesses testify in Pukanic murder trial in Belgrade

Autor: mses
BELGRADE, July 9 (Hina) - Slobodan Ruzic, former lawyer for Robert Matanic, who is indicted for the assassination of the Nacional co-owner Ivo Pukanic, testified at the trial of Sreten Jocic, Zeljko Milovanovic and Milenko Kuzmanovic in Belgrade on Friday.

The witness said he had never heard Matanic mentioning Sreten Jocic, also known as Joca Amsterdam, the first indictee in the Belgrade trial.

Ruzic had been Matanic's lawyer for about five years in Serbia. He said all he knew of the Pukanic murder had come from the media.

The witness said he had known from before Slobodan Djurovic, one of the indictees who is standing trial in Zagreb on the same charges.

Ruzic testified that he had used to meet him in a cafe near his office in Belgrade as Djurovic's business office was also in the vicinity.

He said that Djurovic had once arrived in his office to ask him about fees for Matanic's defence. According to the witness, Djurovic had said that somebody asked him to pay those costs. A part of lawyer's fees was paid by Matanic's mother and another part in the amount of EUR 10,000 was covered by Djurovic.

Another witness, Aleksandar Pejcinovic, testified about his friendship with Milenko Kuzamnovic.

Pejcinovic said he had been in Croatia twice, in 2007 and 2008, together with Kuzmanovic when he met Robert Matanic, Luka Matanic and Amir Mafalani.

Sreten Jocic is charged with organising the group to assassinate Pukanic.

Pukanic and his business associate, Niko Franjic, were killed by a car bomb outside the Nacional building in central Zagreb in October 2008. Franjic was a collateral victim.

Jocic, Milovanovic and Kuzmanovic were indicted in October 2009 in Belgrade for conspiracy to commit crime and for murder in the first degree. They allegedly murdered Pukanic for a reward of at least 1.5 million euros.

Jocic was arrested in Belgrade in late April 2009. Milovanovic, one of two persons suspected of committing the murder, was arrested in Belgrade on 31 May 2009, while Kuzmanovic was arrested the day before, also in Belgrade.

The other men on trial in Zagreb are Robert and Luka Matanic, Amir Mafalani, Slobodan Djurovic and Bojan Guduric. Their trial began on February 3.
