More than 400 workers spontaneously gathered by the road and obstructed traffic to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with what they called the Croatian government's failure to respond to their request to cancel the sales contract with the Polish company Zlomrex.
On 10 April, the workers sent a letter to the government to inform it about the situation in the ironworks and about delays in the payment of their salaries.
The Croatian government and Zlomrex concluded a contract on the acquisition of the Split Ironworks by the Polish company in 2007.
Workers insist that the contract pushed the ironworks into a difficult situation.
Production was suspended in mid-April after all production reserves were exhausted, and all 480 workers were sent on leave. Workers fear that they will not get their pay for the leave period.
The ironworks' accounts are blocked as the factory's debt exceeds HRK 46 million.
Trade unionists in the ironworks accuse Zlomrex of using the Split plant for laundering money.
On 28 April, workers staged a protest rally in front of the county administration offices in Split.
