Primorac made the statement on Tuesday in response to demands by protesting students that tuition fees be cancelled in tertiary education. Students at several faculties in Zagreb and some other cities have been holding sit-ins and other kinds of protest for three weeks.
Primorac said today that success would be the main criterion and that all excellent students, regardless of their financial status, would be given the opportunity to study free of charge.
The Science, Education and Sports Ministry said on Monday that it would appoint a commission comprising representatives of the academic community, notably teachers and students, who will define a system of financing studies and student tuition fees based on which students will be encouraged to excel in their studies.
