ZAGREB, June 19 (Hina) - Several civil society associations have sent an open letter to Croatia's leaders: President Stjepan Mesic, Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, over the visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday and Saturday, with the purpose to warn about "continuous violations of human rights" in China.

NGos such as the Centre for Peace Studies, B.a.b.e., Documenta, the GOLJP civil committee for human rights etc., urge the top Croatian officials to condemn human rights' breaches in China and call on President Hu Jintao to see to it that Chinese authorities comply with international human rights conventions.

The NGOs say in the open letter that they could understand that the Chinese president's visit had a great bearing on the improvement of economic and political relations between the two countries, but they say that they also would like to voice their criticism against what they say everyday violations of rights of human rights activists, the country's failure to ensure fair trials, death penalties, and discriminations against Buddhist, Christian and Muslim believers.
