On this occasion, Europol Assistant Director Troels Orting, the Croatian national police chief, Oliver Grbic and other officials held a news conference in that southern Croatian seaside resort.
Troels Orting told the press that Croatia had a great role in information exchange with Europol and that the protection of witnesses was of key importance in the struggle against organised crime.
Holding this event in Croatia shows that the Croatian police actively participate in as well as create Europe's security system, Grbic said.
"We made headway in the anti-corruption drive in recent months," he said adding that an important segment in the clampdown on organised crime is witness protection.
According to him, Croatia has worked together with partner services in Europe and the world on 15 cases to this effect and that so far 41 people have been included in the witness protection programmes.
He said that Croatia and Europol signed a cooperation agreement in 2006.
In 2004, Croatia adopted witness protection legislation and the country also has a police department for this purpose. There is also the commission tasked with making decisions on including people in witness protection programmes and on revocation of those programmes.
Europol, the European Law Enforcement Organisation, aims at improving the effectiveness and co-operation of the competent authorities in the Member States in preventing and combating terrorism, unlawful drug trafficking and other serious forms of organised crime
It was set up in 1999.
