Autor: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 14 March (Hina) - Croatian  Education Minister Radovan Fuchs and the Rector of the University of Mostar, Zoran Tomić, on Friday signed an agreement under which Croatia will finance the higher education institution in the neighbouring country with ten million euros annually.

On Thursday, the Andrej Plenković cabinet decided to allocate €10 million to the University of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to ensure its financial consolidation and stability.

This agreement, signed in Mostar today, represents significant support for the development of higher education in that biggest city in Herzegovina.

The money will be transferred every four months in amounts of €2.5 million.

Fuchs emphasised that the agreement represents an additional incentive for improving educational conditions.

"This university plays a crucial role in the survival of the Croat people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thus in preserving our educational system," the minister told reporters.

Tomić thanked the Croatian government for its continuous support.

"This agreement is a key support for our stability and will enable us to make further progress in all aspects of our work," said the rector.

The University of Mostar is the only one in Bosnia and Herzegovina where classes are held in the Croatian language. It consists of an academy and ten faculties, with a staff of 1,000 teachers and 12,000 students.

In recent months, there have been several strikes by the unions due to low salaries.
