PAKISTAN COAL MINING
epa10900187 Coal miners work at a coal mine on the outskirts of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan province, Pakistan, 04 October 2023. The district administration on 02 October announced a ban on mining in Quetta for two days after a report indicated the possibility of an earthquake in Balochistan. Officials asked citizens to remain calm and keep informed from official sources, and to follow government issued safety measures in case of emergency. Pakistan's National Seismic Mongering Centre (NSMC), however, rejected a Dutch scientist's prediction of a strong earthquake in the country, stating that accurate earthquake predictions are not possible and such reports cause panic among the public. Since the earthquake forecast, authorities said they have been conducting mock drills. EPA/FAYYAZ AHMED
