AFGHANISTAN BRAILLE DAY
epa11061678 Visually impaired men attend a training session to learn to read in braille for International Braille Day, in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, 06 January 2024. International Braille Day is celebrated on 04 January. In Balkh province, Afghanistan, a government-established special school for the blind and deaf with over a hundred students has faced challenges, including a lack of standard buildings and professional Braille teachers. The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan had been providing technical support, teaching over 2000 blind and deaf children in 13 provinces, distributing Braille materials, until they closed their operations on the orders of Taliban govt. On International Braille Day, blind individuals in Balkh highlighted issues like scarce educational resources, limited job opportunities, and insufficient access to public services. EPA/STRINGER
